So there’s something that has been weighing heavily on my mind the past few weeks and I tried to put it on Twitter last night and I just couldn’t seem to get it out in only 140 characters. So I thought I’d put it in a supremely overdue blog post!

I have been in Nashville about 15 months now and it has been one of the best, most confusing, most difficult and most FUN years of my life. I have learned many hard lessons about trust, about people who misuse their faith, about the industry and about making music. Just a few months after moving to town I found out I was going to be on The Voice. I had actually auditioned for Season 1, but was pre-committed to directing a show back at Oklahoma State that I couldn’t bail on to continue the secondary auditions, so I was thrilled when I got called back for Season 2 and got to continue!

MUCH has happened in this year, my first year in the industry. I wish to God I could tell-all – but unfortunately, I can’t. But perhaps what I have been thinking about more than anything is the definition of success. And I firmly believe that success is NOT some dangling carrot out in the future. Because how do you know when you even get there?

This is your LIFE.

YOUR life. And especially in this industry, there is somewhat of a very long JOURNEY to get to where you want to be.

If your goal is to be some big famous artist that sings songs that matter to people, that encourage them, make them smile and enjoy THEIR lives a little bit more, well it may take quite a few years to get there! And if you don’t give up, someday you WILL. But its far from instant. And here’s my point, that if you are so focused on getting there and that SOMEDAY is quite aways away… you better make sure you LOVE the days in between. Not all of them, but do you love the work it takes? DO you love growing, learning, making mistakes and figuring out what it takes in your soul to pick yourself back up and keep going? Do you know how forgiveness feels, how to admit when you’re wrong, and how to create new ideas? If you’re living your life all for some dangling carrot in the future that you may or may not ever get or find, and you hate the grind and the process, but expect to love it “someday,” well, what if you don’t get “someday?” What if you just have today and these years with your family and friends and you didn’t take time to go out and enjoy your life, have nice dinners, go skiing, and create the “middle moments” that turn into memories you treasure later in your life.

My point is simply this, work HARD for what you want, but love the grind. Love the work it takes to get there, love people, and love the journey. Or you may be wasting your life, and precious, precious time.

Until next time,
(which hopefully won’t be another year)

Adley

Because if there’s one thing that’s cooler than watching Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green sit on motorized thrones and fight over prospective contestants, it’s watching those contestants fight each other in a neon boxing ring–”singing in harmony and secretly trying to destroy each other,” as Adam Levine so excitingly worded it on this Monday’s first Battle Rounds episode.
